Miguel Vadillo completes his swim across Lake Ontario in support of Canadian Tire Jumpstart
After months of training, Miguel Vadillo became the 44th person to swim across Lake Ontario.
The Guelph Marlins swim coach and Toronto Star designer, 40, began his 52km swim at Niagara-on-the Lake and arrived at Toronto’s Marilyn Bell Park just after 3 p.m., completing his 18 hour swim ahead of schedule.
“This was by far the most difficult thing I've ever done,” said Vadillo. “I wanted to quit four times. The night was very hard and disorienting, but when the sun came up it was like coming back to life.”
While working as a designer for the Toronto Star last summer, Vadillo read about the staggering number of avoidable drownings in Ontario.
“I wanted to do something,” said Vadillo. “The water can be a lot of fun, if you respect it.”
Vadillo chose to raise funds in support of Canadian Tire Jumpstart. All donations will help kids in financial need learn how to swim. Donations to support Vadillo’s goal can still be made on his personal Canadian Tire Jumpstart fundraising page here.
“All of the great things I have in my life are thanks to sport,” said Vadillo. “If what I did helps a few kids, I'm going to be very happy.”

Ride for Jumpstart is ready to roll
After months of training, the Ride for Jumpstart team is ready to take on their 800 Km Maritime ride. On Wednesday, September 8, a team of eight Canadian cyclists will begin their five day ride in support of Canadian Tire Jumpstart.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be a part of this peloton of cyclists all working towards the same goal,” said Karen Forrest, Ride for Jumpstart’s lead organizer.
Their squad has set a goal of raising $75,000 to give more than 7,500 financially challenged children a sporting chance.
The team of cyclists from Victoria, British Columbia, to Carbonear, Newfoundland, chose to support Canadian Tire Jumpstart because of its national scope, yet local program focus. The funds raised by each team member will help financially challenged children to get involved in organized sport and recreation programs in each of the rider’s respective communities. Donations are being accepted on the group’s fundraising page, here.
Local Canadian Tire Jumpstart Chapters and Canadian Tire stores along the route have also organized community events to raise funds in support of the ride. To learn more about the local community events, please click here.
Friends and family can also follow the group’s progress through the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Twitter feed.
